Definition:
The Silver Route has its origins in a Roman path builded in the year 139
aC. Its Roman name was "Iter ab Emerita Asturicam" (path from
Mérida to Astorga). Its name seem to come from the Arabbian language
"balata" (stoned path) that developed into "plata".
From Astorga, the route will go on to the North, to Oviedo and Gijón;
and from Mérida, it will go to the South, to Seville, the valley
of the river Guadalquivir and Cadiz. It is 945 km long.
Route:
In Asturias
it is 105 km long and the route goes on as follows: Gijón, Serín,
Lugones, Oviedo, Mieres, Pola de Lena, Puente Los Fierros and the mountain
pass of Pajares. The variant GR 100-1, called Roman path of La
Carisa, with the following route: Ujo, Carabanzo de Lena, La Vega de Espines,
Cuaña Carreceo, La Cruz de Fuentes, col of Propinde, Pendilla and
Busdongo de León, where it links with the GR 100.
In Castilla-León
the route will begin in the mountain pass of Pajares, and will go to Astorga,
by Riello and Sueros de Cepedo, and la Bañeza, Benavente, Montamarte,
Zamora, Calzada de Valdunciel, Salamanca, Moville, Valdelacasa and Calzada
de Bejar; it is about 400 km long.
In Extremadura, from the
Calzada de Bejar, will go to Baños de Montemayor, Cañaveral,
Càceres, Mèrida, Almendralejo, Zafra til Monesterio; it
is about 350 km long.
In Andalusia
the route will begin in Real de Jara, from Monesterio, and will go
on by Almadén de la Plata, Castiblanco de los Arroyos, Guillena,
Santiponce, Seville, Jerez de la Frontera and Cadiz; it is 200 km long.
