Puçol - Aldea del Obispo/Termas de Monfortinho

Definition:
This footpath is a clear line from East to West that links the Mediterranean
sea with the Atlantic ocean by the center of the Iberian peninsule. It
begins in Puçol (València) and, after crossing the País
Valencià, goes into Aragon and Castilla la Mancha, Madrid, and
Castilla León until the border between Spain and Portugal in Aldea
del Obispo (Salamanca). The variant GR 10-1 goes on as follows: Barco
de Ávila, Termas de Monfortinho, Lisboa. Together with the GR 8
and the GR 4, is part of the European footpath E-7 (Lisboa -Constanza).
In Portugal it is called GR 12 (Rota da Idanha).
Route:
In València it
begins in Puçol (full of orange trees) and the it goes to the West
by the Picaio, the monastery of Sant Esperit, Segart, refuge of Vicent
Penyafott, Serra, Gátova, sanctuary of La Verge de la Cova Santa,
Sacañet, Andilla and Arcos de las Salinas. It is 130 km long. In
Andilla, it coincides with the GR 7.
In Aragon it is 205 km long.
It begins in Abejuela, in the massif of Javalambre (2.020 m), and agoes
to Arcos de las Salinas, Camarena de la Sierra (GR 8), Valacloche and
Villel (GR 8). From here on, it goes to Rubiales, Bezas, Albarracín,
Monterde, Bronchales and Orihuela del Tremedal by the beginnings of the
most important rivers of the area, like the rivers Guadalaviar, Túria,
Gabriel, Arcos and Tajo. The variant GR 10-1 has the following
route: Rubiales, Jabaloyas, Toril, Masegosos, El Vallecillo, Guadalaviar,
Griegos, Brochales and Orihuela del Tremedal.
In Castilla-la Mancha, from
the Montes Universales to the Sierra de Ayllón. This section crosses
Guadalajara from East to North-West. It is 270 km long, and its route
goes on as follows: Orea, Paralejos de las Truchas, Cifuentes, Jadraque,
Cogolluda and Tamajón. This route is divided in three sections:
the first one by the area of Alto Tajo; the second one, by La Alcarria;
and the third one by the peak Ocejón (the villages of Arquitectura
Negra).
In Madrid the footpath crosses
the whole area from the North-East to the South-West. From Guadalajara,
it goes to Pontón de la Oliva, by the service paths of the channel
of Isabel II. It goes on to Patones de Arriba, Torrelaguna, gully of San
Vicnete, Sierra de la Cabrera, monastery of San Antonio, Cañada
Real Segoviana, Sierra de Guadarrama (goes on by it by the South), Pedriza
de Manzanares, Mataelpino, Navacerrada, mountain pass of Fuenfría
(1.794 m) and Peña del Águila (2.002 m), San Lorenzo del
Escorial, Robledo de Chavela, Pelayos de la Sierra, and San Martín
de Valdeiglesias. It is about 200 km long.
In Castilla-León
the footpath goes on by the river Tormes, by the crest of Port del Pico
until Barco de Ávila, where it forks in two. The variant GR 10-1
goes to Portugal (Termas de Monfortinho). The GR 10 in this point goes
to Salamanca until Aldea del Obispo, in the border with Portugal. It's
going to be 156 km long, but nowadays there are only 85 marked km. The
route goes on as follows: Sierra de Béjar, Sotoserrano, Magarraz,
La Alberca, Peña de Francia, Monsagro, Serradilla del Arroyo, Guadapero,
Ciudad Rodrigo, Gallegos de Argañán, La Alameda de Gardón,
Castillejo de Dos Casas, Aldea del Obispo, and border with Portugal. In
the section in Salamanca from Béjar on the marks have almost disappeared.
In Extremadura the route
matches with the variant GR 10-1 that comes from Barco de Ávila,
and goes by the valley of the river Jerte, crosses the Eastern side of
the Sierra de Gata, and goes into Portugal by Monfortinho to end in Lisboa.
In Portugal
this footpath is called GR 12 Rota da Idanha. It begins in the border
with Spain, in the village of Termas de Monfortinho. From here on, it
goes on as follows: Termas de Monfortinho, Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Blanco,
Maçâo, Fátima and Lisboa. The marked section is about
80 km long and goes from Termas de Monfortinho to Idanha-a-Nova with the
following route: Termas de Monfortinho, Monfortinho, Barragem de Panha
Garcia, Sierra de Azenha, Monsanto, Idanha-a-Velha (confluence point with
the GR 22), Alcaforces, Sierra do Almutâo, Garragem Marechal, Carmona
and Idanha-a-Nova.
