Eastern side

Southern side

Definition: It is the first marked footpath in Spain (made in 1974). Its route goes on by the Eastern side of Spain, but a little bit far away from the coast. It is part of the European footpath E-4 (Tarifa-Sparta). After crossing France and Andorra (in those two countries the reference is the same), it enters in Catalonia by the Farga de Moles, crosses it and goes on by the País Valencià, Múrcia and Andalusia until arriving to Tarifa, near Algeciras, where it ends and, one day, will meet with the end of the GR 92.

Route:
In Catalonia the route is the following: La Farga de Moles, la Seu d'Urgell, Fórnols, Tuixén, Sant Llorenç de Morunys, Solsona, el Miracle, sanctuary of Pinós, Vallespinosa, Bellprat, la Riba, Montral, la Mussara, col of L'Alforja, Colldejou, Tivissa, Benifallet, Paüls, refuge of Caro and Fredes. It is 375 km long. There are three variants in the Catalan territory: the GR 7-3, with the following route: Serra de l'Argentera (kp 12,750, from the col of La Teixeta to Colldejou, near de col Roig), the Mola de Colldejou and the col of El Guix (3,750 km); the GR 7-5, with the following route: Pla de Riart, Lladurs, Rasa de Cirera and Solsona (9,100 km); and the GR 7-8 with the following route:Kp 6,200 of the section from Cabra del Camp to la Riba of the GR 7, the Barceloneta and kp 12,230 of the section from Cabra del Camp to La Riba of the GR 7 (4,500 km).

The route of the section in the País Valencià is a winding line that covers the whole area in about 550 km. It enters in Castellón by the pass of Tortosa and goes by Vallibona, Morella,Ares de Mestre, Benasal, Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, Villahermosa, Sant Vicente de Cortes, Montanejos (GR 36), Montan, Bejis, Andilla, Chelva, refuge of Las Lomas, Cerro Simón, Tabarla, Cortes de Pallas, col of Caroche, Casas de Benali, Venta Boquilla, refuge of Santiago Reig, Alcoi, Castalla, Elda and Pinoso.

The section in Múrcia is about 300 km long and is the spine of the Murcian rambling. It begins in Torre del Rico (Jumilla) and goes on by the landscapes of the high plateau, the fertile plain of the river Segura and the North-Eastern side of Múrcia. Its route goes on as following: Torre del Rico (Jumilla), watercourse of La Raja, Puerta de Jaime, Venta Román, Azujarejo, Cieza, dam of Cárcavo, reservoir, Calasparra, Moratalla (La Puerta), Cortijos de la Risca, hermitage of San Juan, Campo de San Juan, Salinas de Zacatín, Calar de la Santa, El Sabinar, watercourse of La Rogativa, hermitage of La Rogativa, Puerto Alto and Cañada de la Cruz (Moratalla).

In Andalusia, Almaciles is the first reference of the GR 7 from where it goes to Puebla de Don Fadrique. From here, the GR 7 forks into two branches. Also here, in Puebla de Don Fadrique, the GR 143 begins and ends.
The Northern branch, the first route of this GR in Andalusia, crosses the Natural Park of Mágina and the Natural Park of Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, the largest one in Andalusia. It also goes on by the Natural Park of Sierras Subbéticas, with beautiful landscapes. This route goes on as follows: Puebla de Don Fadrique, Cazorla, Quesada, Jódar, Cambil, Alcala la Real, Priego de Córdoba, Rute, Archidona, Villanueva del Trabuco and Villanueva del Gauche.
The Southern branch, that appeared as an alternative to the previous route, crosses the crest of Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de Baza, a short section of the Alpujarra (in Almeria and Granada). The popular architecture and other important aspects are really interesting. The route goes on as follows: Puebla de Don Fadrique, Huéscar, Galera, Cúllar, Baza, Charches, Puerto de la Ragua, Bayárcal, Válor, Trevélez, Pitres, Lanjarón, Saleres, Alhama de Granada, Riogordo and Villanueva del Gauche.

At the end of this section, after Villanueva del Cauche, the GR goes on by such interesting places as: Sierra del Valle de Abdalajís, el Chorro (a paradise for climbers), Serrania de Ronda, Llanos de Libar and Montejaque, as well as the Natural Park of Grazalema, the Natural Park of Los Alcornocales and the Sierra de Ojén.

The most interesting points from the forking till the end are: Villanueva del Gauche, Antequera, Ardales, El Burgo, Arriate, Ronda, Ubrique, Castellar de la Frontera and Tarifa.

The variant GR 7-9 from Antequera to Cuevas Bajas (Northern branch), is 26 km long and its route goes on as follows: Antequera, Cortijo de Los Almendros, path of Las Algaidas, crossroads of the river Guadalhorce and A-92, path from La Venta del Río to the Caserío de Rojas, Cartoajal, school, cemetery, water tanks, path from Antequera to Cuevas Bajas, path from Cuevas Bajas to Antequera, path from Pajariego to Cuevas Bajas. Both branches and the variant are about 1500 km long in Andalusia.
