GENERAL MAP
Definition:
This footpath is going to cross the whole of the Iberian peninsule from
East to West, to Empúries to Finisterri, following a route by the
Southern side of the Pyrennees and of the Cantabrian crest.
Route:
In
Catalonia the route goes on as follows: Empúries,
Banyoles, Besalú, Oix, Sant Pau de Segúries, Sant Joan de les Abadesses,
Ripoll, Alpens, Lluçà, Gironella, Sant Llorenç de Morunys, Oliana, col
of Comiols, dam of Terradets, dam of Canyelles, mountain pass of Mont-rebei
and Pont de Montanyana. There are two variants, the GR 1-1,
that goes by Sant
Lleir de Vall d'Ora, Llinars de l'Aiguadora, el Sisquer, Sant Martí de
la Corriu and Sant Llorenç de Morunys (6:20 h 24,660 km), and the
GR 1-4that goes by Hostal Roig, Cellers, Moror, Sant Esteve de
la Sarga and Mont-Rebei.- 39,000 km
It enters in Aragon by the
Pont de Montanyana, and its first section goes by Graus, Tierrantona and
Mesón de Ligüerre. From here, the GR 1 forks in two: one part
goes by the Sierra and gullies of Guara, and the other one goes by Alquézar.
Before arriving to Arguis, the footpath has reunified and continues on
by Bolea, Loarre, Riglos and Sos del Rey Católico until it enters
into Navarra by Peña. It is about 315 km long, full of varied landscapes.
The section marked goes from Pont de Montañana to the Mesón
de Ligüerre. From here until the Mesón Nuevo of Arguis, there
are three small non-marked sections: the one that goes on by Samitier,
Arcusa and the limit of the park; by the south, by Ligüerre de Cinca,
Abinzada, Naval and the limit of the park; and, finally, from the Mesón
Nuevo to Arguis. From here until Navarra the only marked section goes
until the Reino de los Mallos. The whole route is: Pont de Montanyana,
Las Badías, Castigaleu, Laguarres, Lascuarre, Pociello, Capella,
Graus, Grustán, Pano, Caneto, Trillo, Salinas de Trillo, Troncedo,
Formigales, Morillo de Monclús, Tierrantona, Muro de Roda, El Humo,
Palo, Presa de Mediano, Ligüerre de Cinca, Mesón de Ligüerre,
Samitier, Arcusa, Las Bellostas, Otín, Bara, Nocito, Lúsera,
Belsué, Arguis, Bolea, Aniés, Loarre, Sarsamarcuello, Linás
de Marcuello, Riglos, Murillo de Gállego, Agüero, San Felices,
Fuencalderas, Biel, Petilla de Aragón and Sos del Rey Católico.
Southern variant (Sierra de Guara): Mesón de Ligüerre, Abizanda,
Naval, límit del parc, Colungo, Asque, Alquézar, San Pelegrín,
Radiquero, Alberuela de Liena, Bierge, San Román, limit of the
park, Casbas de Huesca, Ibieca, Arbaniés, Sipán, Santa Eulalia
la Mayor (limit of the park), San Julián de Banzo, Barranco Reguero
del Águila and Mesón Nuevo de Arguis.
From
Sos del Rey Católico, the GR 1 goes into Navarra
by the Sierra de la Peña, goes on by Caseda, Gallipienzo and the
Caçada de los Alacencos before getting over the sanctuary of Ujué/Uxue.
From this balcony, the footpath goes down to the plains of Olite (Erriberri)
and enters inot Lizarra by Larraga and Boigorri until Allo. Here, there
are two options: the first one goes by the Planes de Sesma until Lodosa
and, after crossing the river Ebro, connects with La Rioja; the second
section continues by the same path to the West and surrounds the legendary
Montejurra. In Los Arcos, the GR crosses the path to Santiago de Compostela
and gets in touch with the mountain by the valley of Aguilar until the
sanctuary of Kodes, near Alaba.
In Euskadi,
the route goes from Santa Cruz de Campezo to Bóveda by Bernedo,
Lagrón, Peñacerrada, Arminón, Fontecha, Espejo de
Fontecha and Bóveda de Valdegobía, from where it goes up
to the pass of La Horca to enter into Castilla-León. Some interesting
places are: Sierra de Codés, the beeches forest of Sierra de Toloño
and others.
In
Castella-Lleó there are two sections: the first one goes
by the area of Burgos, and the other one goes by Palencia. The Burgos
section goes on by this route: pass of La Horca, San Pantaleón
de Losa, Pérex, Villate, Villamor, La Cerca, Salinas de Rosio,
Tabliega, Bárcena de Pienza, Torme, Villanueva la Blanca, Salazar,
Nela, Brizuela, Puentedey, Quintanilla, Valdebodres, Villamartín
de Sotocuevas, Pedrosa de Valdeparres, Dosante, Busnela, Haedo de los
Pueblos and pass of El Escudo (Cantabria) (76 km). Some of the most interesting
places of this section are: the hermitage of San Pantaleón de Losa,
Salinas de Rosio, Lagunas de Gayanagos, gullies of Dulla and the Natural
Park of Ojo Guareña. The planned route of the Palencia section
is: Coll de la Cruz, Armada, Valverde de la Sierra, Besande, Prioro, Tejerina,
Remolina, Las Salas, Salamón, Lois, Acebedo, Maraña and
pass of Tarna.
In enters in
Cantabria from Burgos by
the pass of El Escudo, and its route is the following: Corconte, Lanchares,
Servillas, Servillejas, Campo Alto, Quintana, Orzales, Requejo, Reinosa,
Aradillos, Fontecha, Camino, Argüeso, Serna, Soto, Espinillas, Barrio,
Suso and col Somahoz, from where it goes into Palencia to Salcedillo and
Brañosera. In Reinosao, the GR 1 crosses the GR 74, coincides with
the GR 73 until Morancas and with the GR 72 until Aradillos.
The route in Asturias has
not been defined yet.
In
Galiza there is only one circular route, called Rota da Marronda,
that begins and ends in Fondeo. It is 66 km long and the route goes by:
Fonteo, Pereira, O Cádavo, Estornín, Cubilledo, Cabreira,
Piñeira, Cortelleva, Mandriras, A Braña and Fonteo.
