Description
of the route that goes as close as possible of the imaginary
line drawn by the Paris Meridian (Dunkerque - Paris- Barcelona).
The measure of this meridian, 200 years ago, was used to define
the length of the meter. In commemoration of this anniversary,
the French and the Catalan governments decided to give a cultural
sense to this route. It can be made on foot and in mountain
bike.
The
route begins in Col of the Pal, near the peak of the Costabona,
and goes on from north to south through the regions of Ripollès,
Osona, Vallès Oriental and Maresme. It ends in Ocata
beach, in Masnou, where the meridian really ends (not in Barcelona,
as the tradition says).
This
route has an own marking system: black signposts, of about 0,60
m high, with a plaque at its top with an arrow (vertical marks);
and green arrows and crosses (horizontal marks).
The
route has been divided in several sections that are thought
to be walked in one day (between 15 and 25 km), that begin and
end in places where there can easily go to via public or private
transport (train, bus, car...). Each section has its own card,
with an introduction, general information, map (section of a
map of the ICC scale 1:50.000 and the route superimposed) and
description of the route (with distances in time and km).
This
description has been complemented with information about the
meridian's measure process; an essay about travelling by this
route in mountain bike; information about the landscape and
vegetation of the specified areas; and a section with specific
information of the villages through which the route goes on.
In
its margins there are the drawings that allow bikers to follow
the route. There are also special variants for bikers, in order
to avoid those sections where bikes cannot go on properly.
This
information is completed with the incorporation of the coordinates
of each reference point, in order to be able to go on using
the GPS positioning system.
