Route to walk from Matagalls (1699 m) to Montserrat (709 m). The Club Excursionista de Gràcia organizes it in memory of the one made by Mossèn Jaume Oliveras (1877-1957), one of the pioneers of climbing in Catalonia, in August 4th, 1904. From 1972 (every 2 years) and from 1989 (every year), the Club organizes the Matagalls-Montserrat walk by this route.
The route begins at the top of the Matagalls, in the massif of El Montseny; then, it goes down to Col Formic and goes on by the Pla de la Calma till Aiguafreda, where it crosses the river Congost and goes up again by the Cingles de Bertí. By the Serra de la Codina and another crests it reaches the Col of Poses, between Sant Feliu de Codines and Sant Quirze Safaja. After this, it goes up to the Col of Termes, and goes on next to the Serrat de les Pedres, just before going down to Sant Llorenç Savall. From this village, the route goes to the southern side of the Serra de Sant Llorenç del Munt, and goes up until the Casa Nova de l'Obac, from where the route goes to Vacarisses. After this, the route crosses the river Llobregat . From Monistrol de Montserrat, it goes up until the Montserrat sanctuary.
This route has own marks: two horizontal stripes, one green and another one red. Sometimes, it has a white point in the middle that facilitates its location.
This route has been divided in several sections that can be covered in one day (between 15 and 20 km aprox), that begin and end in places with public transports (train, bus, car, etc...). Each section is a kind of card: introduction and general information, map (part of a map of the ICC scale 1:50.000, and the description of the route (with distances in tim and km).
The description has been complemented with several information about Mossèn Jaume Oliveres, and the reproduction of the summary of his first walk made by this route in less than 24 hours.
In the section “Thematic Routes”, you will be able to find more information about the new published guide of the route MATAGALLS-MONTSERRAT, as well as other really interesting routes.
